Lucifer...if that's true, if you choose to be vulnerable around me...then I choose to be vulnerable around you.
— Chloe to Lucifer
in Detective Amenadiel

Chloe Jane Morningstar (née Decker) is the deuteragonist in the TV series Lucifer. She is a celestial human being (formerly a blessed human), the daughter of Johnathan Decker (a former LAPD officer) and Penelope Decker (an actress), the ex-wife of Daniel Espinoza, the mother of Beatrice Espinoza, and the wife (as well as soul mate and eternal partner) of the fallen archangel Lucifer.

Originally an actress, she became an LAPD homicide detective after her father was murdered. While there, she married fellow officer Dan Espinoza and had a daughter, Beatrice "Trixie" Espinoza. During an investigation into a fellow cop, Malcolm Graham, Chloe became the pariah of the department after Malcolm was shot at Palmetto Street and she still continued her investigation. As a result, her and Dan's marriage fell apart because of it and the two eventually separated. While investigating a murder at the Lux nightclub, Chloe encounters Lucifer, but for the first two years, she refuses to believe at first that he is actually the Devil himself. Despite her protests, she's assisted by Lucifer on the case and the two end up forming a professional relationship as a detective-consultant duo as well as falling in love with each other.

After learning that the supernatural world existed, Chloe took Trixie and ran away to Rome, where she researched Lucifer to see if he was the actual embodiment of evil. While there, she was manipulated by Father William Kinley into betraying Lucifer to send him back to Hell. Though Chloe ultimately didn't go through with it, Lucifer found out, and the two were unable to reconcile, as Chloe was unsure if she could accept Lucifer's true self. However, Chloe found she couldn't be without Lucifer and tried to patch things up, only to be stopped by the arrival of Eve, who resumed her former relationship with him. The two were eventually able to make amends and became partners again, but Chloe became worried that Eve was a bad influence on him. After helping Lucifer take the first steps to forgive himself, Chloe helped him stop demons from invading L.A. before tearfully saying goodbye to Lucifer and admitting her love to him. Lucifer subsequently returned to Hell to keep the demons in line.

Chloe spent the next two months drowning her sorrows in different ways before "Lucifer" returned. Though happy, Chloe sensed something was off, discovering he was actually Lucifer's brother Michael. After outing him, she learned God had a hand in her birth to cross paths with Lucifer as his gift, causing another rift when Lucifer actually returned. With Amenadiel's help, she worked through her issues and the two finally became a couple. Their new relationship suffered more hiccups and Chloe was forced to face her fears regarding Lucifer's true feelings for her after Michael got inside her head when he kidnapped her. When Lucifer disappeared whilst in the process of expressing his feelings, Chloe decided to give him space to work out his issues with his Father after He showed up. The two were able to rekindle their relationship, and once Lucifer proposed to Chloe, she decided to retire from the LAPD when she became a celestial human. After Michael manipulated Dan's death, Chloe aided Lucifer in his against Michael. She was killed by Michael and went to Heaven, reuniting with her father, before Lucifer resurrected her and confessed his love. Several months later, the two married and Chloe became known as Lucifer's eternal partner.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Before Chloe was born, God sent Amenadiel to Earth to bless a couple that had trouble conceiving a child. Amenadiel later realized that the couple was Penelope and John Decker and that Chloe was the blessed child. Chloe Decker was later born to police officer John and actress Penelope Decker on November 6, 1981.

Father's Murder[]

Chloe's father was a detective with the LAPD, while her mother was a second-rate actress. As a teenager, Chloe had a role in a low-budget movie, Hot Tub High School, in which she appears topless. Though she gained some very minor fame for the role, Chloe realized that this line of work wasn't for her and decided to become a police officer like her father. Unfortunately, her father died when she was 19. While leaving the funeral, Nick, a paparazzo, took it upon himself to break into the funeral and take pictures of Chloe. In return, Chloe punched his camera, breaking the lens and gave up acting for good.

LAPD Career[]

When she started working at the LAPD, she met Dan Espinoza, who was also an LAPD officer. They later married and had a daughter named Beatrice (nicknamed "Trixie"). Chloe and Dan are now divorced, as Chloe believes he would always put work before his family and never make time for them.

Lucifer: TV Series[]

Morningstar Pilot[]

In "Morningstar Pilot", Chloe meets Lucifer after an aspiring musician and old acquaintance of Lucifer's, Delilah, is killed in a drive-by shooting just outside Lucifer's club, Lux. Lucifer had used his influence to coax her into the spotlight and, though he treats most of humanity with bemused indifference, becomes interested in finding Delilah's killer, becoming the unwanted partner of Chloe. Thanks to Lucifer's powers of persuasion, he is able to find out enough information about the killer from psychiatrist Linda and track him down. The culprit, Delilah's manager Jimmy, intended to create a spike in music sales with the untimely demise of the singer. In a fit of rage, Jimmy shoots both Chloe and Lucifer - the bullets have no effect on the latter, and Lucifer makes sure to give Jimmy his punishment before rushing Chloe to the hospital. While Chloe recovers (and tries to figure out who Lucifer really is), Lucifer decides that it would be fun to punish criminals in L.A.

Personality[]

Chloe is a very tough, strong-willed, down-to-earth, stubborn, highly intelligent, and by-the-books cop who takes pride in her work. This makes her the exact opposite of Lucifer; she constantly berates him for his unorthodox methods and behavior (save for a few instances where she sees them getting results; in which case she will occasionally play along). Due to her skepticism surrounding the Palmetto case, she is unpopular in her department and has few friends - no one wants to be her partner.

Despite all the ugliness she has seen in her years on the job, Chloe does have a caring and friendly nature, especially towards her friends and family. She enjoys spending time with Ella, Linda, and even Lucifer and she loves her daughter Trixie more than anything, always putting her first.

Chloe also has an awkward side, as shown in "Love Handles". Throughout the episode, Chloe makes multiple awkward gestures and comments. The first time Chloe slaps Lucifer's behind after he asks her what she desired. Later, she laughs at Lucifer's comment when Ella Lopez says "ocular discharge". When she finishes she quickly makes a straight face. Also, she tries to finish his sentence when he says, "I hope poor Ricky made him count, enjoying what little life he had left with sex or friends" and Chloe tries to finish it saying, "Or sex with friends" while giving a wink to Lucifer. When he doesn't respond she tells him that's where she thought it was going.

Since the day they met, Chloe seems to be perplexed by Lucifer, constantly dismissing his claims of actually being the Devil, and even from people he's terrified, and even admitting that there is something abnormal and inexplicable about him. Despite this, she admits that she enjoys his company and is hurt when she feels that he is being dishonest with her. She has been known to tease him on occasion, much to Lucifer's chagrin. But no matter how many times she had been told that about Lucifer, Chloe never believed it, even from Lucifer himself, especially because of how close they have gotten recently. When she discovered his claims were true after seeing his true face, she was left in a stunned state and could only repeat her discovery and be left unsettled.

Following her realization Lucifer was indeed the Devil himself, Chloe became consumed by fear and doubt whether or not the suave, yet the compassionate man she had come to love was an act. As a result, she was manipulated by Father Kinly into believing Lucifer was evil incarnate. However, she had changed her mind after Lucifer reveals he is vulnerable around her. Because of Eve wedging her way into their lives, Chloe became increasingly worried Eve was encouraging Lucifer's worse behavior. Eventually, Chloe finally admitted to Lucifer that she loves him.

Physical Appearance[]

Chloe is a beautiful woman in her late 30's with a slim, however, athletic build, standing about 5'7", with bright blue eyes and dirty blonde hair, which she occasionally has up in a ponytail or a knot, but also has it down past her shoulders. Early in her career, Chloe wore the uniform typical for rookie police officers, or beat cops. Now, for around 10 years, she wears clothing authentic to her job as a detective. In Season 1 at first, her attire seemed more professional suits, accurate to most detectives. Later throughout the series, her wardrobe changed to more casual clothing; plain shirts with collared over-shirts (such as jackets and coats of different material), casual skinny pants, boots, etc.

Powers and Abilities[]

Likely due to the miraculous circumstances of her birth (despite being human), Chloe has some mystical attributes.

  • Desire Exhibition Immunity: Chloe is immune not only to Lucifer's, but to any hellish and evil beings powers of persuasion when they are used towards her. However, she is still affected by other powers, such as Amenadiel's chronokinesis, as was shown when she became frozen when time was stopped.
  • Rendering Immortals Vulnerable: Though Chloe did not initially affect Lucifer, as shown in how he is shot without being injured in the "Morningstar Pilot", she was able to shoot and injure him a few episodes later in "Manly Whatnots". Lucifer eventually suspected that it was Chloe's presence that made him vulnerable and successfully tests this theory by cutting his hand while talking to her in "St. Lucifer". Marcus Pierce later speculated in "Anything Pierce Can Do I Can Do Better" that it was Chloe's love that made immortal beings vulnerable, as she had fallen in love with both Lucifer and Pierce - a theory that Lucifer initially rebuked but later agreed with when he found that he could still be injured in Chloe's presence regardless of her feelings for Pierce. In "Quintessential Deckerstar", Amenadiel theorized that God did not determine the situation of any of the characters and, in fact, they cast judgment upon themselves. Thus, to this point, it is unclear if Chloe's ability to cause vulnerability in immortals is innate to her divine origins, or if it is actually Lucifer's love for Chloe ("Who's da New King of Hell?") that causes his mortality in her presence. Unlike Lucifer, Pierce's mortality is not affected by Chloe's proximity. This may be due to the difference between Pierce's immortality and Lucifer's, as Pierce's came from an external curse which once removed, did not reemerge in contrast to Lucifer who is inherently immortal due to being an angel.
  • Desire Exhibition: After spending a night with Lucifer, Chloe somehow gained this power. She is able to use it as easily as Lucifer, and can even use it on him. It is unknown if it works on other celestial beings other than Lucifer.
  • Immunity to Seduction: While every other man and woman Lucifer comes across appears to instantly desire him carnally, Chloe is immune to this along with Lucifer's other powers. As the season progresses, other women stop pursuing Lucifer as his focus narrows to Chloe.

Due to her marriage to Lucifer, Chloe gained celestial power and abilities. Oracle referred to her essentially as a "celestial human", assuring her that while she is still human, she now possesses powers and abilities inherent in all celestial beings. As Oracle put it, Lucifer's power now flows through Chloe. She is learning from both Oracle as well as Lucifer on how to control her powers.

  • Celestial Physiology: Following her marriage to Lucifer, Chloe's body changed to possess celestial qualities, such as the ability to survive the journey between different dimensions, which allowed her to travel to Hell while still being a living human. Therefore, Chloe now possesses abilities inherent in celestial beings. Ever since, Chloe has become quite powerful in her own right, rivaling other celestial beings, save for higher-tier ones such as the Archangels, Seraphim, and Primordial Beings.
    • Immortality: Chloe is now immortal (immune to aging or diseases) and will not age another day. In a flashfoward to the year 2060, despite being almost 80 years of age, she still retains the appearance of a young woman in her youth.
      • Invulnerability: Chloe is now invulnerable to harm via conventional means that would kill a human. Once, when she was stabbed in the chest with a knife, she commented "that was itchy".
      • Regeneration: Chloe can heal from any wound that would kill a human.
      • Supernatural Stamina: Chloe's stamina is comparable to that of an angel.
    • Levitation: Though not capable of true flight to the same extent as an angel, Chloe can levitate herself into the air.
    • Intangibility: Chloe possesses the ability to phase through solid objects.
    • Invisibility: Chloe possesses the ability to render herself completely invisible to human eyes. Additionally, like angels, she can even do this with clothing on.
    • Pyrokinesis: Chloe once ignited a fireplace and a number of candles during a dinner with Lucifer, Oracle, and others.
    • Spirit Communication: For a short time, Chloe was able to see Dan Espinoza's ghost, something that only angels and demons are capable of. Overtime, she learned to see other ghosts.
    • Supernatural Mobility: Chloe has much more speed, agility, reflexes, dexterity, stamina, and endurance than she did as a human, which allows her to perform amazing parkour. She once ran so fast, she caught up to a biker.
    • Supernatural Strength: Chloe gained advanced physical strength to the point that she was able to beat Asmodeus into submission. Chloe continued to use it for some time to subdue human criminals. It also allowed Lucifer to have sex with Chloe without holding back. Chloe also once overpowered and subdued two muscular wrestlers, effortlessly lifting them off their feet at one point.
    • Telekinesis: Chloe once telekinetically summoned a bottle of scotch as well as a glass cup to her hand.
    • Telepathy: Chloe has the ability to read the minds of humans and most other creatures.
    • Teleportation: Chloe gained the ability to travel from one place to another instantly without occupying the space in between. She is even able to travel between dimensions.

From what Lucifer's told me, you are the smartest, most capable, most resourceful person he's ever known.
— Eve to Chloe
  • Acting: Chloe is a former professional actress. She used her acting skills many times during undercover operations.
  • Combatant: As a police detective, Chloe is trained in self-defense (including karate, jujitsu, and boxing) and therefore, is a skilled expert in unarmed hand-to-hand combat. In addition, she knows to take his time during skirmishes to strike where her opponent is most vulnerable. As seen during a discussion with Lucifer, Chloe also has a degree of fist-fighting skills that she had honed from a young age thanks to her father. Her fighting abilities are proved when he temporarily manage to overpower Jason Carlisle. She is also apparently a capable teacher, having effectively taught her daughter Trixie several tricks on how to defend herself. However, after seeing Lucifer's way of fighting, Chloe has since been learning from him. Following her marriage to Lucifer, Chloe was able to hold her own and overpower Asmodeus. She was also able to hold her own against Maze for a time, as well as having been able to fight Lucifer on equal footing when sparring with him.
  • Deductive Analysis: Experienced, observant, and objective and with almost 20 years on the job, Chloe is a highly skilled and excellent detective, with good instincts which she uses to find clues on her work. Unlike most of her co-workers, Chloe rarely jumps to conclusions before she gets her facts straight, even when she is emotionally involved in the case. Continuously, she has been able to notice that something isn't right about Lucifer as well as the several times he has been hiding something. However, she often relies on physical evidence and can be stubborn at times, often with the idea of Lucifer's true nature. Though after learning of the supernatural, she starts doubting her judgment in non-human affairs and has to ask Amenadiel, Maze, and even Lucifer what's real and myth.
  • Interrogator: As a cop, Chloe is highly skilled in interrogating suspects, as many criminals consider her to be intimidating.
  • Marksmanship: Due to her police training, as a police detective, Chloe is an expert in the use of firearms and has an excellent aim with a gun.
  • Peak-Human Physical Condition: As a trained policewoman, Chloe is in top form. She is shown to be very nimble, performing noticeable free-running/parkour off a small building to chase her suspects.

Weaknesses[]

Although she is blessed, Chloe was still only human and therefore, was mortal and thus could be injured, poisoned, or killed the same way any human normally can. However, following her marriage to Lucifer, Chloe gained celestial immortality that made her immune to human weaknesses. Despite this, there are still things of supernatural origin that can harm her.
